"GET TO KNOW BRES" - Meet our newest Director of Maintenance - Scott Hamblen, SMA
Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in rural Lafayette County, near Waverly, Missouri.
What did you want to do when you were growing up?
Growing up I had ambitions to become a Ranger for the U.S. Forestry service.
What was your first job?
My first real job was at the age of 14, I worked for Pioneer seed corn as a pollinator.
Describe your career?
My career started out 15 years ago when I joined a local property management firm in the maintenance department. I worked my way up to maintenance supervisor and then on to building engineer. I came to Block Real Estate Services, maintenance division, Block Maintenance Solutions, (BMS) in July of 2011 as a building engineer. My career has been a lot of hard worked that paid off. I received training in HVAC and management, that training led me to my current position.
How did you end up working within the Commercial Real Estate as Director of Maintenance?
I knew a guy that worked for Executive Hills. He got me in the door and I really started enjoying this type of work. I always tried to go above and beyond, with the hope of one day holding my current position. Block Real Estate Services, LLC (BRES) made that goal a reality this past year.
Do you have any immediate or long-term goals within your current position?
My immediate goal is to keep our department stable and growing. Long term the goal is to streamline all procedures, and make it so any engineer can navigate any building within our portfolio.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned over the years?
I would say the most important thing I have learned over the years is that you treat people how you
want to be treated. A happy group of employees will always put forth extra effort in every job if they are treated well, appreciated and respected.
What are your favorite books within your field and for fun?
I enjoy books regarding HVAC and refrigeration. There is so much good reading there and they make for excellent references down the road. I also enjoy any publication regarding wildlife.
What’s your must-read publication each day?
I would have to say the magazine, Building Operating Management.
