The Importance of Getting Involved
A Block Real Estate Employee shares the importance of getting involved in the professional community outside your job description...
One of the best things I did early on in my career is join a professional organization. No matter what industry you are in, professional organizations enhance your career...and your life! Here's how:
You can network more effectively
By joining the IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management) group, I met a multitude of people in my industry as well as built relationships with many industry partners. I never would have met the majority of these contacts if it wasn't for IREM. Joining a professional organization can help you connect with professionals from a more high-quality pool of individuals than if you were networking without the organization.
It feels good to be part of something that makes a difference
Joining a professional organization gives you the opportunity to add to something that is bigger than yourself. It feels good to be a part of something that makes a difference. Professional organizations generally do this by community outreach programs, credentials, education to further expertise, lobbying for improved public policies and more. You can have a serious positive impact on your industry and community by simply volunteering your time!
You can build your resume
I have belonged to IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management) since 2001 when I took a class and received my first designation. Two years later, I received my second designation and took the leap to become a board member and volunteer my time to further the industry’s best practices. These achievements add significant value to my resume and professional "track record".
It is fulfilling
Since I began my journey with IREM, my time with this group has provided me with great industry partners as well as lifelong friends. I encourage anyone looking to enhance your career to find a professional organization in your area and get involved. It will pay off!
